Winter in Arizona: Snow Play and Sledding in Flagstaff
Wondering where to take the kids sledding or snow play in Arizona? Or maybe you’re just looking for a great place the whole family can enjoy playing in the snow and making snowman!
Flagstaff known as Arizona’s Winter Wonderland is about a 3 hour drive from Phoenix East Valley, so you can take the family up for the day or stay for a weekend.
Most popular spot for snow play in Flagstaff is along US-180. When you are driving along US-180, you may see some ‘self-created’ snow play area. However, The Forest Service has created three formal snowplay areas along Highway 180.
Peak View Winter Parking Area
This paved parking area with a restroom and picnic table is available. Parking is limited, and downhill sledding is not available, but the views are fantastic with open fields of snow nearby for your enjoyment. Only for Snow Play.
Direction: From downtown Flagstaff, take Highway 180 approximately 6.5 miles north of downtown Flagstaff

Wing Mountain Snow Play Area – Closed
Wing Mountain is one of the best places to let the kids zoom down slick hills on sleds and inner tubes. This is a safer place to hop on sled and zoom downhill, build a snowman and throw some snow balls.
Wing Mountain provide well-maintained large paved parking lot and within short walking distance to the snow play areas. You’ll like the convenience of portable type restrooms, sleds available for sale, food and drink concessions on weekends and holidays.
Direction: Highway 180 north approximately 3 miles past Snowbowl Road to marker 226
Cost: $15 per car. No re-entry is allowed

Crowley Pit Winter Parking Area
Crowley Pit is a large depression along US-180 (Fort Valley Road) north of Flagstaff which makes an excellent place to enjoy some sledding in the winter snow. The snow-play area is not maintained and there are no facilities.
Direction: Highway 180 north 9.8 miles past Snowbowl Road (about 1 mile past the Flagstaff Nordic Center) to marker 233

Walker Lake Winter Parking Area
This paved parking area on Hwy 180 has a fabulous view of the San Francisco Peaks, and is equipped with a picnic table and restrooms. It opens up to the vast fields in beautiful Kendrick Park, is a good location for snowplay and is ideal for cross country skiers and snowshoers to explore the sunny meadows.
Direction: Highway 180 north 12 miles past Snowbowl Road to marker 235
Cost: Free
Tips:
1. Be extremely careful when driving along US-180 as road maybe icy and slippery
2. If you plan to go to Wing Mountain Snow Play, go early. They are no allowing people to get in once it is full.
3. You will see sled or snow disc on sale around downtown Flagstaff and gas station. If you missed it, there is a convenience store – Flag Quickstop (next to Shell station) at the junction on US-180
4. Winter gear, snow boots, water proof gloves and attire are highly recommended
5. As most place are not managed, clean up your own trash and do not leave broken sleds in the forest
